Program Overview
The Dairy Data Academy is an innovative educational program designed to prepare the next generation of dairy professionals for a rapidly evolving industry. Through a combination of hands-on experiences at the WKU Smart Holstein Lab and interactive classroom learning, participants explore how dairy science, technology, data, and innovation work together to shape modern dairy operations.
Whether participants come from an agricultural background or are simply interested in technology and problem-solving, the Dairy Data Academy provides a unique opportunity to learn how emerging tools and technologies are transforming the dairy industry and creating new career pathways.
About the Program

Day 1
Explore and Connect: Fun and educational tours
Experience Technology: Observe new technologies, tools, and systems working together
Day 2
What Makes Each Cow Unique: Making sense of identification, phenotypes, and genetics
Building Data Skills: Comparing groups, separating meaningful data from noise, and the first steps in coding
Day 3
Understanding Dairy Data: Discover where data comes from and how to organize and evaluate trustworthy data
Finding Patterns and Problems: Identifying relationships, correlations, and outliers
Day 4
Raw Data into Insights: Cleaning data, using statistics, and creating visualizations
Applying Data to Real-World Decisions: Connecting data analysis with dairy economics, ethical use, and problem-solving
Who Can Apply?
Applicants must be no younger than 16 years old and no older than 21 years old as of the dates of the program in August 2027.
High school juniors or seniors
Students currently enrolled in an accredited two-year or four-year vocational school, college, or university
Individuals who have completed a high school diploma or equivalent and are currently employed at a dairy farm
Strong encouragement for students
pursuing or interested in:
Data science
Data analytics
Computer science
Engineering
Coding/programming
Other technology-related fields
No previous dairy experience or agricultural background is required!
Selection Process
The inaugural Dairy Data Academy will bring together a small cohort of highly motivated participants who are eager to explore the future of dairy through technology, data, and innovation.
Applicants will be evaluated holistically, with consideration given to:
Academic, professional, or personal achievements
Motivation to learn and engage with new ideas
Curiosity and interest in dairy, technology, data, or innovation
Readiness to actively participate in a collaborative learning environment
Previous experiences and accomplishments
Personal and professional goals and how the program may support them
Dairy Data Academy is committed to building a diverse and engaging learning community. Applicants from a wide range of educational, professional, and personal backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Prior dairy industry experience is not required; enthusiasm, curiosity, and a willingness to learn are highly valued.

Applications due December 1, 2026
Upon notification of acceptance, participants will be required to submit a non-refundable registration deposit of $100. All airfare or mileage, lodging, meals, and other program-related expenses will be covered by the Holstein Foundation. Payment of the registration deposit must be received within 30 days of the acceptance notification.
